Cataraft Design: A note on longitudinal diaphragm: There is some extraordinary engineering going on out there in terms of boat design. First I mention the longitudinal diaphragm which creates the safest inflatable cat hull ever constructed. 13 Day Cooler Construction. A significant percentage of my gross weight on a river trip is ice and ...beer. It occured to that this is a simple thermodynamics problem. One only has to balance the coolant mass and latent heat values with the heat loss to arrive at equillibrium. Solve for t or dq/dt Dry ice (246 BTU/lb with a SG 98lb/ft^3). Water Ice (143 BTU with a SG 62lb/ft^3). EPS for 3" thick has a R value of 12 (english units). The inside surface area of the box I'm investigating is 25.2 ft^2. Solving for t (after 2 assumptions), I arrive at 10.5# Dry Ice/ Day. I'll lose a ft^3 of cooler space bot the Water Ice volume would be 2-3 times that. If you open the cooler evertime to get a beer, you'll make the analysis fall apart.
Box construction is as follows: 2 lnghs. of EPS (styrafoam) and cut to dimension and pinned tith 0.60 u stakes. I also used 3M 77 spray adhesive at the joints. I rounded the corners slightly to allow the box easy entry in by dropbag. Coated inside and out with fiberglass cloth & polyester resin gave the box a nice hard shell. At both ends, I also drilled and installed recessed drain plugs PVC and blunt PVC screw on pipe caps. I laminated the PT CDX wood top to 3" EPS to provide support the weight of a passenger. TBC on hinges etc.
